Lately it seems that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is everywhere; all anyone can talk about, covering every imaginable aspect and topic, is how AI will ultimately and inevitably change our lives. While this is undeniably a growing and booming interest, people still don’t really know much about AI, its origins or what it actually is.
To make things easier, we’ve gathered the top 5 things for you to know about AI, so next time the topic comes up you can add to the conversation and not feel left out!
AI Is Older Than You Think
The idea or theory of intelligent robots and artificial beings date back to Antiquity, but the first time the world actually encountered automation was way back in 1914, when Leonardo Torres y Quevedo built a chess automaton considered the world's first computer game, El Ajedrecista (The Chess Player), which could play chess without any human intervention.
Another noted contributor was British mathematician Alan Turing, who is known as one of the founding fathers on the theory and development of AI; Turing invented the famous Turing Test which used a set of questions and evaluations to prove a machine can exhibit Artificial Intelligence and behavior similar or equivalent to that of a human.
There are Many Types of AI Systems
While nowadays we hear mainly about Machine Learning, Automation and Neural Networks, AI is used in dozens of other approaches and applications – like Expert System, which mean gathering facts and data into a knowledge base to mimic human experience; Natural Language Processing, which is concerned with the interactions between computers and human languages and spans across everything from speech recognition, through machine translation, to automatic summarization; and Artificial Creativity, which tries to model, simulate or replicate creativity using a computer, in language, arts and music.
There Is a Sci-Fi Movie Written by AI

Last year, a computer actually generated a full-on screenplay which was turned into a movie! Yeah, the script didn't make much sense and didn't provide much coherence, but Artificial Intelligence still managed to compile data from various science-fiction scripts provided and turn that into a professionally-structured script, complete with actor directions. Make sure to check it out in the link above - it's quite entertaining!
Growth Will be Enormous
Tractica Research forecasts that the revenue generated from the direct and indirect application of AI software is estimated to grow from $643.7 million in 2016 to $36.8 billion by 2025, with 60% of the use cases related to big data and 40% related to image or object recognition, which could give us a good idea of how the market is expected to shape up and evolve.
Many other researches are forecasting similar numbers with a general agreement that this market is going to be, in one word, huge. Moreover, it’s evident that AI is already a big part of our lives and will only continue in becoming a standard in all realms and day-to-day activities – from robot waiters, through AI-generated literature and poetry, to automated vehicles; just to name a few.
In the past year, AI has switched its style from something we thought only scientists or developers can create to something much more fashionable and open to all. Many believe the next developments in AI are definitely linked to deep learning techniques, mainly revolved around making it possible for AI to learn from mistakes - something that would make it that much closer to human behavior. We will see AI work its wonders in our social networks, smart homes, cloud services and hundreds of everyday applications - with a big focus on natural language processing which will truly change human/computer interaction and put voice and voice-control center stage.
We hope this post has shed some light on this vast topic and helped you understand it a bit better! Now you can develop your own AI, can't you?!
